OTTAWA — The Hays Eagles are a win away from playing for the AAA legion state championship after downing Oskaloosa 10-3 Thursday in Ottawa.

Cole Murphy picked up the win with a complete game three-hitter.

Oskaloosa got the Murphy in the first after a single and consecutive bunts plated a run.

The Eagles responded by taking the lead for good with a four-spot in the top of the second.

Murphy led off with a double before a pair of walks loaded the bases. An error tied it before Palmer Hutchison emptied the bases with a two-out single that made it 4-1.

An RBI double brought Oskaloosa within two runs in the third.

Brady Kreutzer got the run back in the fourth, stealing second and third before scoring on a passed ball.

An Oskaloosa error helped the Eagles take a 6-2 lead to the seventh when the Eagles used another four-run inning to put the game away.

Murphy plated two on a double before Dylan Scheibler came up with a pinch-hit RBI single to make it 9-2. Murphy scored the Eagles’ final run on a wild pitch.

Murphy returned for the bottom half and gave up a sacrifice fly before getting a ground out to Grant Coffman at first to see the Eagles onto Friday’s winner’s bracket game against Great Bend.

Hutchison and Murphy each had a pair of hits for the Eagles and combined for five RBI.

The Eagles owned a 7-3 advantage in hits in their second win in as many days. Hays committed just one error.

First pitch between the Eagles and Great Bend is set for 6 p.m. in Ottawa.
