The Hays High School wrestling team split a pair of duals Thursday in the Indians’ home opener for the 2017-18 season.
The Indians, in their only home action until mid-January, were defeated by Pratt, 43-24, then took out a shorthanded Plainville team 53-21 to cap Thursday’s event.
Hays High won three of the first four matches against the Greenbacks to start the day. Jordan Zimmerman grabbed an 8-3 decision against Pratt’s Devon Weber at 106 and Corey Hale pinned Pratt’s Dylan Cox at 120 pounds in 2 minutes, 27 seconds. At 126, the Indians’ Cesar Macias picked up a 6-1 decision. The only loss in the first four matches for Hays High came at 113 with Grant Karlin suffering a 6-1 loss to Pratt’s Kaiser Pelland.
After the win at 126, Pratt went on to win the next eight matches before Hays High’s Trey VanPelt broke the streak with his pin at 220 pounds. VanPelt, the No. 4 ranked wrestler at 220 in Class 4A, won in 3:24 against Pratt’s Sevren Hence. Logan Schulte also picked up a win via forfeit at 285 for the Indians.
Against Plainville, just nine matches were wrestled with Hays High taking four of them and Plainville five.
Hays High’s wins came at 132 with Blake Stieben pinning Plainville’s Hunter Cole, at 152 with Landon Summers pinning Garrett Whitney, 220 with VanPelt earning a pin and 285 with Schulte earning a pin.
Finnesy, ranked No. 3 at 160 in Class 3-2-1A, was 2-0 for the day for the Cardinals. Plainville was without one of its other top wrestlers in Noah Hansen. The senior, a state qualifier a year ago, is out with a broken thumb suffered late in the football season and is expected to be back in early to mid-January.
