MANHATTAN — Cole Zimmerman provided the go-ahead punch and that’s all the Thomas More Prep-Marian baseball team needed to earn its way into the Class 3A state championship game.
The Monarchs, after Zimmerman put them on the board in the third inning with a two-out RBI single, ended up defeating Riley County 2-0 in Friday’s semifinal at Tointon Family Stadium.
The win puts No. 1 seed TMP in the 5:45 title game against seventh-seeded Sabetha. The winner will be crowned the 2018 3A state champion.
Zimmerman’s RBI was one of just two Monarch hits. The final run scored on an error at third base for Riley County.
Chase Werth threw a complete-game gem with nine strikeouts, giving up just two hits and no walks, a day after hitting a game-winning three-run home run in a 5-2 win against Wellsville.
Sabetha defeated Marion, 9-4, in the other semifinal Friday.
