The Hays Eagles Sr. Legion baseball team captured three wins Sunday and walked away with the tournament championship of the KC Legends Wood Bat Tournament in Kansas City.

The Eagles started the day with a 5-2 victory against the Buhler 18-under Nationals, then captured a 7-4 win against the Shawnee 17-under Rockets.

In thrilling fashion, the Eagles walked away with the title, 9-8, against the Missouri Nationals after a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth by Brett Herrman.

That came after the Eagles had tied the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh of the back-and-forth game.

Hays, down four starters this weekend, finished 5-0, to push its record to 11-1-1.

In the final game, Hays had a 5-0 lead through three innings, but the Nationals scored seven through the fourth and fifth to take a lead. The Eagles then plated two in the fifth to tie the game, before the teams exchanged runs in the seventh.

The game was tied in the bottom of the seventh when Hays’ Cole Murphy stole home, setting up Herrman later with his game-winning heroics.

Palmer Hutchison picked up the win in 5.2 innings of relief of starter Braiden Stauth.

Hutchison gave up five runs (one earned) on five hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.

In the game against Buhler, Hays scored all five of its runs in the sixth inning with two coming on a hit by Brock Lummus.

Stauth got the win in one inning of relief of starter Carson Jacobs.

Hutchison finished with two hits for Hays.

Against Shawnee, Herrman again provided the heroics, hitting a walk-off three-run home run to break a 3-3 tie. It was the La Crosse product’s lone hit of the game.

Hutchison got the win in two innings of relief of Murphy, who also had two hits in the game.

The Eagles are back in action Thursday against Norton, a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Larks Park.
