The Fort Hays State University softball team nabbed a pair of wins Wednesday against Newman University at Tiger Stadium.
The Tigers posted 3-1 and 3-2 wins to push their record to 19-18. Newman fell to 13-34 after the sweep.
In Game 1, the Tigers broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning when Elise Capra scored on a passed ball, which ended up being the deciding run. Lily Sale tacked on some insurance with a double to left to score Katie Alder and set the final margin. Hailey Chapman took the win for FHSU, going the distance. She allowed one earned run on two hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
Sale finished with two hits.
In the nightcap, FHSU fell behind 2-1 in the top of the fourth, before scoring a run in each of the sixth and seventh to claim the victory.
Alder singled to score Chapman to tie the game. Then Allison Jurgensen provided the game winner in the seventh with a single to score Sale and end the game. Terran Caldwell collected two hits for the Tigers in the leadoff spot. She also drove in FHSU’s first run to tie the game in the first.
Michaelanne Nelson pitched the complete game for the win for FHSU. She gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
FHSU hits the road Friday and Saturday to take on Central Missouri and Southwest Baptist. Game times are 2 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday in Warrensburg, Mo., and Bolivar, Mo., respectively.
