The Thomas More Prep-Marian boys golf team took third place in the Mid-Continent League tournament on Thursday at Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course.

TMP senior Cameron Rozean led the Monarchs with a 79, finishing third individually.

Phillipsburg claimed the team title with a 332, eight shots ahead of Trego, while TMP recorded a 349.

“We had lots of guys play real solid on either the front nine or the back nine, just didn’t quite put a full solid round together,” TMP coach Bryan VonFeldt said. “Cameron came back and played really well on the back nine to get in there and take third.

“Would’ve liked to maybe give Phillipsburg a run for their money, but at least we hung in there and got third place.”

Plainville’s Parker Krob won the individual title by six strokes with a 73. Phillipsburg's Trey Sides took second with a 79, edging Rozean on the tiebreaker.

Trego’s Dalton Mai and Phillipsburg’s Tyler Martin rounded out the top five, each shooting 80s.

After heavy rain this week and cool temperatures on Thursday, VonFeldt said the conditions weren’t ideal, but manageable.

“I thought the wind was supposed to blow a little bit more than it did today,” he said. “It was bad enough out there, but it could have been a lot worse.”

Ethan Brummer and Tyler Robben recorded top-20 finishes, with Brummer placing 13th with an 88 and Robben taking 16th with an 89.

The Monarchs, who have two tournament team titles to their credit this season, will set their sights on earning a state berth in Monday’s regional hosted by Hoisington at Great Bend’s Lake Barton Golf Club.

“I think the kids are pretty confident heading into regionals,” VonFeldt said. “You always have to go play solid golf. We know we’ve got to play solid, and as long as we do that, we should find ourselves at state in a little over a week.”

The Class 3A state meet will be held on May 20 at Emporia Municipal Golf Course.
