CONCORDIA — A furious rally for the Thomas More Prep-Marian baseball team fell short as the Monarchs dropped a 15-14 slugfest in Wednesday’s regional semifinal against hosting Concordia.

The Monarchs found themselves trailing 15-5 before exploding for nine runs in the bottom of the fifth to creep back within a run.

However, TMP was held scoreless the last two innings as Concordia held on to advance to the regional final.

The Monarchs ended their season 15-5.

TMP scored four runs in the bottom of the first but Concordia got nine runs (six earned) off TMP starter Colby Dreiling in the second.

TMP’s huge fifth inning was fueled by a three-run double by Dreiling that cut the deficit to 15-9. Tyson Dinkel’s single drove in two more and Dinkel came around to score on a double from Jace Wentling. TMP then tacked on two more runs off wild pitches.

The Monarchs managed just one base runner in the last two innings and went in order in the seventh.

TMP finished with 12 hits. Brady Kreutzer had three hits while Dreiling, Wentling and Carson Jacobs each had two.

Concordia fell 7-5 to Minneapolis in the regional title game.
