Thomas More Prep-Marian will send a big contingent to the State Outdoor Track and Field Championships after a strong showing in Thursday night’s Class 3A regional meet at Scott City.
TMP qualified 17 athletes (11 girls and six boys) for next week's state meet in Wichita.
The Monarch girls took third in the team standings, while the TMP boys were fourth. TMP had three individual champions.
Standout sprinter Ethan Lang won the 400 with a 51.81 and took second in the 200, losing narrowly to Scott City’s Brandon Winderlin with both runners clocking a 23.15.
The Monarchs swept the high jump with Jenna Romme and Jared Mayers.
Romme won the girls’ high jump with a 5 feet, 2 inches, and the Monarchs also qualified Kassidi Yost and Mackinsey Schlautman in the event. Yost was second at 5-10 and Schlautman fourth at 4-10.
Mayers took the boys’ high jump at 6 feet.
Paris Wolf made state in the long jump with a fourth-place showing at 16-6 3/4. Abby Rueschoff qualified in the triple jump, taking third at 35-6 3/4.
Adell Riedel took second in the 800-meter run with a 2:27.17.
TMP’s Sasha Wasinger was second to Phillipsburg’s Ashley Babcock in the shot put. Wasinger had a throw of 36-4.25 while Babcock’s winning toss went 42-2 1/2. Babcock also won the discus at 118-11.
The girls 3,200-meter relay team (Emilee Lane, Julia Werth, Emily Schippers and Adell Riedel) took second with a 10:11.08. Colby won the race in 10:05.48. The 1,600 relay team (M.K. Dwyer, Schippers and Riedel and Yost) took third.
The boys 3,200-meter relay team (Lucas Lang, Blayne Riedel, Sheldon Weber and Ethan Lang) placed third at 8:35.96. The 1,600 relay team of Lance Lang, Riedel, Lucas Lang and Ethan Lang also took third in 3:31.99.
Sheldon Weber earned a state spot in the 1,600 (4:51.26) and 3,200 (10:56.44), taking fourth in both events.
The Norton girls won the team title by a point over Phillipsburg. Scott City won the team title on the boys' side.
The state meet is next Friday and Saturday at Cessna Stadium.
