WICHITA — The Hays High track and field team saw eight athletes qualify for state during Friday’s Class 5A regional meet at Wichita Northwest High School.
The Indians will be sending five boys and three girls to the State Outdoor Track and Field Championship next Friday and Saturday at Cessna Stadium.
Five of the qualifiers were in field events.
For the boys, Gavin Meyers took third in the javelin with a 159-10, Roy Moroni was fourth in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, Tucker Veach was third in the pole vault by clearing 12-6 and Kyler Beckman took fourth in the triple jump at 40-2.25.
Logan Harris placed third in the girls shot put with a 34-7.50.
On the track, Brooklyn Schaffer was second in the 300 hurdles with a 48.56, and Landri Dotts was fourth in the girls 3,200 run with a 13:01.22.
Da’Vontai Robinson qualified in the boys 300-meter hurdles with a 42.11, placing fourth.
The Indian boys were eighth in the team standing while the girls were ninth.
Newton won the boys team title while McPherson took the girls crown.
HAYS HIGH SOCCER ENDS SEASON: The Hays High girls soccer team ended its season with a heartbreaker in Thursday’s Class 5A regional final at Valley Center, falling 2-1 in three overtimes.
Valley Center scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick early in the third extra session
The Indians finished 11-2-5, playing eight overtime games. Hays allowed just seven goals all season.
Valley Center scored the first goal early in the second half but Hays knotted it up on Allison Shubert’s penalty kick after Caroline Robben drew a foul.
It was the final game for Hays High seniors Cori Isbell, Savannah Schneider, Hannah McGuire and Kallie Leiker.
