DODGE CITY — The Hays Larks dropped a key game with the Dodge City A’s on Monday, falling 8-5 on the road.
Heading into Tuesday night's home game with the A’s, the Larks owned a 9-6 record in the KCLB’s Jayhawk West Division, sitting a half-game ahead of Liberal for first place.
To win the division outright and advance to the KCLB Championship series, the Larks would need a win on Tuesday against the A’s and need the A’s to take at least one game against Liberal in their two-game series with Bee Jays on Wednesday and Thursday. Liberal owns the tiebreaker against Hays with a 5-3 head-to-head record against the Larks.
The A’s broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning with three runs off Rustin Hays. Larks starter Michael Gilliland went six innings, allowing five runs on five hits with two walks while striking out nine.
Mikey Gangwish put the Larks on the board with a two-run homer in the top of the second inning, but the A’s took control with four runs in the bottom of the third. Justin Lee and Jarrod Belbin each had two hits for the Larks.
