The Hays Sr. Eagles rolled to a 12-3 victory over Emporia on Thursday night at Larks Park, moving to 2-0 in pool play in the American Legion Class AA/AAA state tournament.

The Eagles (32-6) pounded out 17 hits, including six extra-base knocks.

Hays scored four runs in the top of the first. Willie Sennett led off with a double and scored on Palmer Hutchison’s sacrifice fly. Brady Kreutzer delivered a two-run triple and Jamison Martin scored Kreutzer on a single to make it 4-0.

With Hays leading 4-2 in the third, Dominic Bainter came through with a three-run homer to right field, and the Eagles stayed in control the rest of the way.

Hays tacked on two more runs in the fourth after back-to-back RBI doubles from Trey Riggs and Brock Lummus. In the seventh, Cody Petersen had an RBI double and Hutchison added an RBI single.

Trey Riggs went 3.1 innings on the mound, allowing two runs on five hits to earn the win. Tate Garcia threw three innings, giving up one unearned run. Cody Petersen got the final two outs on the mound.

The Eagles are in prime position to advance out of Class AAA pool play heading into Friday night’s Great Bend game, which will follow the the 6 p.m. game between Sabetha and Iola.

Great Bend and Emporia are both 1-1 in pool play while Ottawa is 0-2. The top two teams in each pool will advance to Saturday’s semifinals. The championship game is set for 3:15 Saturday.

Great Bend run-ruled Ottawa 13-1 in the morning game Thursday. Both AA pool play game were blowouts, with Sabetha routing Russell 17-1 and Iola earning a 10-0 win over Norton. Sabetha and Iola have already locked up spots in Saturday’s semis.

Russell faces Norton at 10 a.m. on Friday, followed by Ottawa vs. Emporia.
