CIMARRON — The Hays High girls tennis team won the Cimarron Invitational on Thursday in the Indians' season debut.

Lynsie Hansen won the tournament at No. 1 singles with a 3-0 record. Hansen beat Cimarron’s Jayelynn Powell 6-0 and Cassidy Schmidt 7-6 (8) and Ulysses’ Autumn Pauda 6-0.

Macey Speier won No. 2 singles for the Indians, taking matches against Cimarron’s Astin Byer (6-0), Ulysses’ Anissa Terrazas (6-0), Salina Central’s Natalie Dale (6-2) and Cimarron’s Cheyenne Benton (6-3).

The Indians finished with 40 team points, seven points ahead of second-place Cimarron.

Kayler Wellbrock and Sage Zweifel earned second place in No. 2 doubles with a 3-2 record including a forfeit win.

Hays High’s No. 1 doubles team of Taylor Deines and Mylah Potter went 2-2.

The Indians will host the Hays High Invitational next Thursday.


Hays High soccer wins opener

WICHITA — The Hays High boys soccer team opened the season with a 4-1 road win over Wichita Independent on Thursday.

Diego Muller scored two goals while Trayton Roya and Trevor Gross had a goal apiece. Matt Goodale recorded two assists and Alexciz Cano also added an assist for the Indians.

Hays will play Wichita Classical at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wichita Independent.
