In a battle of defending champs, Smith Center earned a 27-7 road win over Phillipsburg on Friday night.

The Redmen, last year’s 1A champion, handed defending 2A champion Phillipsburg its second straight loss after the Panthers were knocked off by Plainville the week before.

Jaden Atwood ran for 163 yards and two touchdowns, while Colton Shoemaker finished with 101 yards and 12 carries for Smith Center.

No. 1-ranked Smith Center will host No. 2-ranked Plainville next Friday.

Thunder Ridge 48, Hill City 22

At Hill City, Thunder Ridge rolled against the Ringnecks, moving to 3-0 for the first time since the 2013 season.

Senior Reece Struckhoff had a monster game for the Longhorns, rushing for 235 yards on 22 carries with five touchdowns.

The Longhorns will be on the road at Northern Valley next week.

Victoria 50, Macksville 0

At Macksville, sophomore quarterback Grant Schoenrock scored five touchdowns and rushed for 189 yards as the Knights improved to 3-0.

Running back Jayvon Pruitt added 63 yards on nine carries. Pruitt also caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Schoenrock.

Ellis 50, Ellinwood 17

At Ellinwood, Ellis bounced back from back-to-back losses to open the season and earned its first win under coach Ty Cass.
