Here’s a look at key area matchups for Week 5 of the high school football season.
CLIFTON-CLYDE (4-0) AT VICTORIA (4-0)
After posting three straight shutouts to start the season, Clifton-Clyde gave up its first points of the season last week in a 50-22 rout of Hill City. The Eagles have gotten offensive touchdowns from nine different players this season with Aiden Rudolph leading the way, rushing for 421 yards and 10 touchdowns and throwing for 231 yards and seven scores. Victoria will truly test the Eagles, however, as one of the state’s traditional eight-man powers. The Knights have blown out the likes of Otis-Bison and Central Plains and have outscored their foes 212-44. Grant Schoenrock has run for 571 yards and 13 touchdowns and also thrown for 222 yards and four scores. Jayvon Pruitt has added nine rushing touchdowns and 366 yards.
HAYS HIGH (1-3) AT WICHITA SOUTH (3-1)
The Indians will be looking to bounce back from last week's 35-32 home loss against Garden City while Wichita South is coming off its first loss, falling 26-14 to Wichita East. South quarterback Jashun Grant has rushed for 604 yards and eight touchdowns while passing for 295 yards with a pair of TDs. Jordan Huggins has added 254 yards on the ground for the Titans. Hays High sophomore quarterback Dylan Dreiling is tied for the WAC lead in touchdown passes thrown with six. He ranks third in the conference in passing yards with 483. Hayden Brown leads the Indians in rushing with 301 yards while Jaren Kanak has a team-high 212 receiving yards. Hays High has the top two tacklers in the conference — Gavin Meyers with 55 tackles and Gaven Haselhorst with 48 stops.
PHILLIPSBURG (1-3) VS. TMP-MARIAN (1-3) AT LEWIS FIELD STADIUM
Defending Class 2A state champion Phillipsburg is looking to get back on the winning track after three straight losses to Plainville, Smith Center and Norton. The Panthers took a 39-14 loss to Norton last week. Quarterback Ty Sides threw for 113 yards in the loss while Kagan Keeten made five receptions for 57 yards with a touchdown. TMP has been solid defensively but has struggled to put up points. The Monarchs fell 42-12 to top-ranked Hoisington last week. TMP freshman Kade Harris had a rushing touchdown and also threw a 15-yard TD to Jace Lang.
ST. FRANCIS (4-0) AT HOXIE (2-2)
St. Francis has yet to be challenged this season, outscoring opponents 202-2 in its first four games. St. Francis is coming off a 48-2 win over Decatur Community. Hoxie is looking to bounce back from a 56-26 loss to Wichita County. Wylie Weems leads Hoxie in receiving with 184 yards and has rushed 177 yards. Dylan Weimer has a team-high 263 rushing yards with six touchdowns.
OSBORNE (4-0) AT LOGAN/PALCO (3-1)
Osborne has cruised to a 4-0 start, outscoring its opponents 206-54. The Bulldogs are coming off a 48-0 win over Sylvan-Lucas while Logan/Palco rolled to a 54-14 win over Wilson. Senior Darrien Holloway has rushed for 552 yards and nine touchdowns for Osborne while sophomore Mason Schurr has added 353 yards on the ground with six TDs. Sophomore Josh Uhland has 396 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground for Logan/Palco while quarterback Dylan Van Laeys has thrown for 304 yards.
