Hays High sophomore Taleia McCrae was sitting in a 13th place after the first round of the Class 5A state tournament on Monday at Emporia Municipal Golf Course.

McCrae carded a 90 for the Indians on Monday, 11 shots behind leader Allison Comer from St. James Academy.

Hays High junior Sophia Garrison finished the first round with a 94, tied for 21st.

The Indians missed the cut as a team, with the top six teams qualifying for the second round. McCrae and Garrison made the cut as individuals and will compete for top-20 medals on Tuesday.

Hays High shot 187 on the front nine, but shot 227 on the back nine.

"Very cold and windy day," HHS coach Mark Watts said. "The girls played awesome on the front but couldn't continue it on the back."

Katie Dinkel recorded a 104 for the Indians while Gracie Wente and Andrea Lopez shot 110 and 111, respectively, and Sierra Smith finished with a 125.
