Christmas came early for a pair of local anglers this past weekend.
Todd Morstorf and his son, Dawson, took home the top prize, as well as the Big Fish award, during the Kansas Crappie Trail's Merry Fishmas tournament Dec. 21 on Perry Reservoir.
The Morstorfs weighed 10.49 pounds of crappie, including a 2.02-pound slab that earned Big Fish honors, to edge out Brandon and Ken Manis by just 0.20 pounds for the top prize. Fellow Topekan Dustin Hobbs took third with a 9.28-pound bag. Scott and Joey Wall took fourth with 9.01 pounds and Tony Niemeyer and Ryan German rounded out the top five with 8.80 pounds.
Following the tournament, the anglers and members of the public enjoyed a fish fry at Don and Tom's Bait Shop, 2108 N.E. Meriden Road in Topeka.
The Kansas Crappie Trail will kick off its first season on the Crappie Masters circuit with a March 7 qualifier tournament on Hillsdale Lake. The entry fee for that tournament will be $100, and takeoff/weigh-in will be at the Jayhawk Marina. For more information, contact Dylan Faulconer at KansasCrappieTrail@yahoo.com or 913-416-3481.
