Hays High freshman Sarah Zimmerman is headed to the inaugural Kansas Girls State Wrestling Tournament after placing fifth at 109 pounds in the regional tournament this past weekend in McPherson.

Zimmerman won her first three matches to make the regional semifinals, pinning Newton’s Emily Torres, Haysville Campus’ Blake Rhea and Wichita’s Ryasia McDougle.

Lakin’s Isabell Ortiz pinned Zimmerman in the semifinals. Zimmerman was pinned by Abliene’s Skyleigh Pflaster in her first consolation match but bounced back to pin Holcomb’s Amilia Martinez in the fifth-place match.

Zimmerman will take a 21-14 record into the girls state tournament Feb. 27 at Tony’s Pizza Event Center in Salina.

Zimmerman was one of five area girls wrestlers to make the state tournament. Oakley’s Mikyah Cain was third at 116 pounds, and WaKeeney-Trego’s Sydney Boyle took third at 143 pounds. Hoxie will send two to state, with Marissa Porsch taking sixth at 130 pounds, and Ashlyn Klaus placing sixth at 143 pounds.
