HUTCHINSON — The Wichita Collegiate boys basketball team made just a couple longer runs than the Colby Eagles to claim a 58-46 win Wednesday in the opening game of the Class 3A state tournament in Hutchinson.

Collegiate, 21-3, advances to the semifinals at 4:45 p.m. Friday against the winner of the Beloit-Nemaha Central game.

"Our biggest thing was they have great athletes out there who run the floor well," Colby coach Parker McKee said. "When we turned the ball over, they made us pay for it. When we ran our stuff and made it more of a half-court game, we executed real well. We played seven guys and they were kind of gassed at the end of the game. It was important for us to make it a half-court, grind-it-out kind of game and Collegiate did a good job of speeding us up and getting us out of that."

Gradey Dick led Collegiate with 19 points. Jack Duarte added 17.

For Colby, Calvin Stapp and Peyton Wahlmeier each scored 12 points. Ryan Myers added 11.

Colby had 19 turnovers to 11 for the Spartans.

Collegiate jumped out to a 7-0 run, aided by a pair of turnovers, took out its starters and allowed a Colby 7-0 run. With Collegiate’s starters back in, the Spartans made another 7-0 run. Wahlmeier hit a short jumper at the buzzer to get Colby back within five, 14-9.

Collegiate led by 10 late in the second quarter. An off-balance 10-foot shot by Calvin Stapp cut the Spartan advantage to eight at halftime, 28-20.

Colby opened the third quarter with a Wahlmeier three-point play and a Myers 3-point shot. A pair of Stapp layups got the Eagles within one with 3:59 left in the period. A Collegiate turnover set up a Stapp layup 30 seconds later. Duarte hit 1 of 2 free throws and a layup off a steal with four seconds left in the quarter to put Collegiate back up 40-32 at the end of the period.

Duarte opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer.

Colby ends the season 16-8, losing five seniors.

"Our seniors really built a foundation for us to build on," McKee said. "They did a really good job of helping our younger kids develop. This was my first year here and we put in a new offense and defense and they did a really good job of buying into that."
