The TMP-Marian Monarchs 18-U summer baseball team split with Russell in Friday’s season-opening doubleheader at TMP Field.

The Monarchs dropped the opener, 14-10, in eight innings before bouncing back for a 6-2 win in the second game in five innings.

In the opener, TMP forced the extra inning after Mason Robbins scored on Nick Helget’s fielder’s choice groundout in the bottom of the seventh.

Russell then took control with five runs in the top of the eighth. Andrew Roth, Andrew Kraus, Kyler Frilschen and Kaden Rome all had RBI hits in the inning.

Frilschen and Kirk Huser each had three hits for Russell in the first game. Kaden Baalman doubled twice.

TMP’s Noah Gibson had three hits for the Monarchs in the opener.

In the second game, the Monarchs scored three in the first thanks to a two-run double from Nick Helget and an RBI single from Nick Hermann. TMP tacked on two more in the second inning and stayed in control.

Hermann tossed all five innings to earn the win, allowing two runs and four hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

The Monarchs will be back in action for a doubleheader with Otis-Bison on Tuesday at TMP Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
