OAK GROVE, Mo. — The Hays Senior Eagles captured the USSSAA MO-KAN State High School Championship on Sunday, earning a 10-5 win over Velocity 18U in the final.
The Eagles moved to 28-3 on the season.
The Eagles scored four runs in the first inning of the final. Brock Lummus drove in Hays’ first run with a single, and Remington Cox followed with an RBI single to tie it at 2. Dawson VonFeldt gave the Eagles a lead on a single, and Dalton Dale capped the frame with an RBI double.
Hays tacked on two more runs off Velocity miscues in the second. The Eagles were up by a run heading into the bottom of the fifth before gaining separation with three runs. Remington Cox had an RBI groundout before VonFeldt had an RBI double and Dale followed with an RBI single.
Cox, VonFeldt and Dale each had two hits.
Brady Kreutzer earned the win in relief, tossing 4.2 scoreless innings and striking out seven.
In Sunday’s semifinal, Colby Dreiling threw a complete game shutout. He allowed six hits and one walk while striking out seven. Carson Jacobs went 3-for-3 at the plate and Lummus had two hits.
