Crow & Co. and Hutchinson Art Center's Dirty Hands Book Club pairs reading with hands-on creativity
The first book the group will read is "Art Journal Freedom: How to Journal Creatively With Color & Composition," by Dina Wakley. Booklovers will first purchase the journal at Crow & Co., read it, and then meet at 6:30 p.m. June 12 at the art center to create artwork. They will meet again to discuss the book and their artwork at 6:30 on June 24 at the book store. Anyone can join the process.
"The books give you techniques to try," said Sara Crow, the store's owner. "We are encouraging people to be creative."
Wakley's book explores both color and composition. But artists are free to break all the rules. July's sessions will feature "Making Art a Practice: How to Be the Artist You Are" by Cat Bennett. This book focuses on using art to find inspiration.
Crow hopes to keep this book club alive each month, meeting in the middle of the month at the art center and having discussions on the last Saturday of each month at the bookstore. She also hopes people in this group will start up their own art journals that will continue through the process. Anyone can join the process.
Along with artist's biographies, the group will explore books on art technique and possibly art criticism. The books will serve to inspire the art.
On June 15, Crow & Co. is holding a virtual book launch event featuring the release of "In the Heights: Finding Home" book release.
