A Plainville police officer fatally shot a Hays woman early Sunday morning after she drew a gun when he tried to arrest her, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said.

Killed was 29-year-old Nicole Dechant, said Melissa Underwood, spokeswoman for the KBI.

The officer's name wasn't being made public.

Underwood said the officer went about 12:50 a.m. Sunday to a convenience store at 601 S. Washington in Plainville after learning that Dechant, whom he knew had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant out for her arrest, was buying food there.

Preliminary information indicates the officer approached Dechant as she sat on a curb outside the store and told her he would be arresting her on the warrant, Underwood said.

She said Dechant responded by reaching inside her bag and pulling out a gun, she said.

The officer drew his handgun and ordered Dechant to put down her gun, Underwood said.

Dechant ignored the commands and the officer fired multiple times, striking her, she said.

Dechant was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer wasn't hurt.

Circumstances of the incident remained under investigation.
