Backpack for Kids program will offer school supplies Aug. 5.

Ellis County students needing school supplies could get a backpack’s worth of help from the Backpack for Kids program hosted by the First Call for Help.

Volunteers will hand out backpacks with school supplies from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Presbyterian Church, 2900 Hall St. There is no limit to the number of students a family can register for the event, but students must live in Ellis County and they should register by July 26 to guarantee a backpack.

What school supplies are available at the Backpack for Kids program?

The school supplies available will vary by grade with pre-K, first through fifth grade, sixth through eight grade and high school options available. Each bag will contain pencils, folders and notebooks, but younger students will get crayons, markers and glue sticks, among other items.

Students picking up school supplies will also get a smile kit from Delta Dental — which has toothpaste, a toothbrush and floss — and a hygiene bag which has bottles of shampoo. The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation provided a grant to purchase some supplies and Walmart donated hand sanitizer.

Laura Shoaff, project coordinator at First Call for Help, said students should register so they can get the backpack with the appropriate school supplies. The backpacks are available Aug. 5, and from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 6 if a family didn’t register in time.

“We have a lot of parents who, whether it be due to COVID or other reasons, are kind of financially struggling right now,” she said. “It’s helpful to give their kids kind of a boost.”

Families can register their students for the event by completing the registration form at First Call for Help’s website. Families can also call 785-623-2800, email or walk into the office, 607 E 13th St.
