TMP girls XC runners win regional title

The Thomas More Prep-Marian girls cross country team won a Class 3A regional title at Norton on Saturday.

NORTON — The Thomas More Prep-Marian girls cross country team claimed a Class 3A regional team title on Saturday at the Prairie Dog Golf Course in Norton, qualifying for state.

The Monarchs turned in five top-20 finishes.

Sophia Allen placed seventh to lead TMP, finishing in seventh in 21:26.24. Abby Rueschhoff took ninth (21:47.2), Kyleigh Allen was 12th (22:15.94), Allison Weber was 13th (22:16.5) and Julianna Baalman was 18th (22:58.62).

TMP won the regional with 26 points, edging Norton by three points for the team title.

The Monarch girls will compete in the Class 3A state meet next Saturday at Wamego Country Club.

Colby’s Lara Murdock won the girls race in 19:47.09. Two more Eagles placed in the top six, with Kathie Chavez taking fourth in 20:15.93 and Seanna Metcalf earning sixth in 20:21.46. Norton’s Jaelyn Rumback was fifth in 21:06.83.

The Monarch boys finished third but did not qualify for state. TMP-Marian sophomore Braydon Binder was 15th in 19:21.51. Caden Becker placed 20th in 19:43.76.

Norton won the boys team title. Rylan Wildeman led the Bluejays with a fifth-place finish in 18:20.53.
